Direct Service Volunteer Opportunities
The Laurel House textline is now available 24/7! We are in need of more volunteers to assist in keeping our Textline running. To support this expanded service, we ask that our textline volunteers commit to at least one shift per month.
Make a direct impact as a textline volunteer—provide crucial support to survivors of domestic violence. Help with safety planning, share information about Laurel House services, and offer a compassionate, nonjudgmental presence to those in need.
How it works:
Volunteers log onto the Textline website at the start of their shift. Survivors and others text HOPE to 85511 to get a text conversation started. You are not alone. There is always a supervisor on call during a volunteer shift and available for any questions or concerns. Supervisors on call are also available to arrange any necessary transportation or emergency hotel stay requests.
Requirements:
- 45 Hour Justice, Autonomy, Restorative, and Safety Training
- Laptop
- WiFi
- Background Check and Clearances
Join our dedicated team of D.A.R.T. volunteer advocates and make a meaningful impact by providing critical after-hours support to survivors of domestic violence. With 24/7 coverage, volunteers play a vital role in answering crisis hotline calls, offering safety planning, connecting survivors to shelter, providing PFA information, and ensuring they receive compassionate, judgment-free support when they need it most.
How it works:
If an officer or medical personnel identifies a person as a victim of domestic violence, they offer the victim the opportunity to have a DART advocate either meet them in person at the scene of the incident, police station, hospital, or another safe location, or speak with them over the phone. You are not alone. There is always a supervisor on call during a volunteer shift and available for any questions or concerns. Supervisors on call are also available to arrange any necessary transportation or emergency hotel stay requests.
Requirements:
- 45 Hour Justice Autonomy, Restorative, and Safety Online Training
- Driver's License and personal vehicle
- Background Check and Clearances
- At least 2 shifts per month
Are you passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of children? Laurel House is seeking patient, energetic, and mature Children’s Program Volunteers to provide a safe, supportive, and fun environment for children living in our program.
How it works:
Children exposed to domestic violence need a stable, nurturing space where they can simply be kids. In this role, you will work alongside our Children’s Support Specialist to facilitate playtime, model positive behaviors, and offer creative outlets that promote healing and joy.
- Facilitate Playtime: Provide both structured and non-structured playtime to children living in the Laurel House program.
- Lead Positive Activities: Provide supportive, non-violent activities for children, either individually or in a group setting (e.g., arts and crafts, reading, board games, or outdoor play).
- Plan & Organize: Assist in providing and organizing child-oriented activities that are engaging and age-appropriate.
- Be Fully Engaged: Participate fully in the activities alongside the children—be ready to jump in and play!
- Guide Behavior: Encourage appropriate behavior and positive social interactions among the children.
- Collaborate with Staff: Must be able to take direction effectively from the Children’s Support Specialist to ensure a safe and cohesive environment.
Requirements:
- Training: Completion of P.C.A.D.V. (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence) approved Domestic Violence Training or Non-Direct Services Training.
- Background Clearances: Must complete and pass the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check.
- Child Rapport: Exceptional rapport with children, with the ability to connect with them naturally and warmly.
- Personal Attributes: A good sense of humor, patience, maturity, and the ability to maintain responsible and appropriate behavior at all times.
- Flexibility: Ability to be flexible and adapt to the changing moods, energy levels, and needs of the children on any given day.
Laurel House is seeking compassionate, patient, and reliable Child Care Volunteers to support parents participating in our counseling services. Many individuals seeking counseling face a major barrier: finding safe, trusted care for their children during their sessions.
How it works:
In this role, you will provide a welcoming, safe, and supportive space for children while their parents or guardians meet with Laurel House counselors. By ensuring the children are safe and engaged, you allow parents the peace of mind to focus entirely on their own healing and support.
- Provide Child Care: Supervise and care for children in a designated play area while their parents are attending counseling sessions.
- Lead Positive Activities: Facilitate supportive, non-violent, and age-appropriate activities (such as reading, arts and crafts, coloring, or board games) to keep children engaged and comfortable.
- Create a Safe Environment: Maintain a nurturing, calm, and predictable atmosphere for children who may be experiencing stress or transition.
- Encourage Positive Behavior: Model and encourage appropriate behavior and gentle social interactions.
- Collaborate with Counseling Staff: Take direction directly from the Counseling Staff to ensure seamless transitions when parents drop off and pick up their children.
- Rapport with Children: Excellent rapport with children of various ages, from toddlers to school-aged kids.
- Personal Attributes: Strong patience, maturity, a good sense of humor, and the ability to maintain responsible, appropriate behavior at all times.
- Flexibility: Ability to adapt quickly to different age groups and the unique emotional or comfort needs of the children on any given day.
